Caput Mortuum (Hue) - Handmade Oil Paint - 40ml

Description

Caput Mortuum is a color made from dark violet brown natural iron oxide pigments from eastern Europe. The color gets its name due to looking like a bruised freshly dead corpse, "Caput Mortuum" literally meaning "Dead Head" in Latin. This color often times in modern times gets mistakenly conflated with Mummy Brown- the two colors are worlds apart in terms of pigment source and handling characteristics, but they do both lend themselves to be good for shadowing and flesh tone mixtures.
My "Hue" is technically not exactly a hue since I am using eastern European violet-brown natural iron oxide pigment for this color, it is essentially the same as historical Caput Mortuum. I say hue because I base my color off of a vintage "Caput Mortuum" color from the 1950's in my vintage paint collection. I deliberately chose to make my imitation color a more subdued and subtle color in terms of saturation- there are a variety of natural iron oxides that can fall under the umbrella of "Caput Mortuum". I feel it is this more subtle violet brown color that captured perfectly the color of bruised dead flesh.
You could say that Caput Mortuum is the Earths natural counterpart to the grisly Mummy Brown.
Caput Mortuum is an opaque dark violet brown color that works perfect for shadows and mixing flesh tones.
